-
Love: you must love this declaration itself and be loyal to the people who uphold it. Whoever does not love the statement or does not love those who live by it will gain no benefit from it.
-
Submission: the opposite of turning away or abandoning. It is to submit to what the statement requires—worshipping Allah alone with no partner and obeying His commands. Once you have acknowledged and testified that there is no god but Allah, you are obliged to yield to His rulings and His religion. If you merely pronounce la ilaha illa Allah yet refuse to submit to Allah’s law and legislation, the formula will not avail you in the least.
-
Acceptance: this is acceptance that negates rejection. You must not reject any of the rights contained in la ilaha illa Allah or anything that it entails. Rather, you accept everything it points to, with wholehearted and proper acceptance.
An eighth condition has also been added, expressed in verse:
An eighth was added: to deny as false
All that is worshipped alongside the True God.
That is, one must disavow polytheism; a person is not a true monotheist until he renounces every form of shirk. Allah the Exalted says, “And when Abraham said to his father and his people, ‘Indeed, I am innocent of what you worship’” (Az-Zukhruf 43:26).
These, then, are the conditions of la ilaha illa Allah—eight in all.
