whereas Islam in its particular sense is the religion with which Allah sent His Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. After the Prophet’s mission, no religion is acceptable except his, and Islam is now limited to following him. Accordingly, a Jew or a Christian can no longer say, “I am a Muslim,” after the Prophet’s advent if he does not follow him; for Islam, after the Prophet’s mission, consists solely in obedience to him. Allah, the Exalted, says: “Say: If you truly love Allah, then follow me and Allah will love you” (Al Imran, 3:31). Such is Islam in both its universal and its particular senses. (7) His phrase “with evidence” means not by blind imitation, but by proofs drawn from the Quran and the Sunnah; this is genuine knowledge. Ibn al-Qayyim, in al-Kafiyah al-Shafiyah, writes: Knowledge is: ‘Allah said,’ ‘His Messenger said,’ And what the Companions—those endowed with insight—said. Knowledge is not your reckless setting up of disagreement Between the revealed texts and the opinion of so-and-so. This, then, is knowledge: knowledge of the Book and the Sunnah. The statements of the scholars merely explain and clarify the words of Allah and of His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him.
