The evidence for this testimony is the verse: “Allah bears witness that there is no god but He—and so do the angels and those endowed with knowledge—upholding justice. There is no god but He, the Almighty, the All-Wise.” (Aal ʿImran 3:18) [33].
“Islam is built upon five” means that these five are not the entirety of Islam; rather, they are its pillars and structural supports, while the remaining prescribed acts complete and perfect them.
(33) In the Qur-anic phrase “shahida” (He has borne witness), the verb carries five interrelated senses: ruling, decreeing, proclaiming, clarifying and binding. Thus, He—majestic and exalted—has decreed, informed, announced, made clear and obligated His servants to know that there is no deity except Him.
“La ilaha” (there is no god) is a negation that excludes all objects of worship besides Allah. “Illa Huwa” (except Him) affirms worship exclusively for Allah. Hence, “la ilaha illa Huwa” means that nothing is rightly worshipped except Allah; whoever worships anything else engages in false worship, as the Almighty says:
