The Pillars of Islam
- The testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah
- Its meaning and evidentiary basis
The pillars of Islam are five: bearing witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; establishing the prayer; paying the zakah; fasting during Ramadan; and making the pilgrimage to Allah’s Sacred House. [32]
(32) Islam stands only upon these pillars; if they are lost, Islam itself cannot remain upright. All other acts of obedience merely complete and perfect these pillars—every devotional act and every good deed serves as a supplement to them. Hence the report in which Jibril asked the Messenger of Allah, in the presence of the Companions, “Tell me about Islam,” and he answered: “Islam is that you testify that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establish the prayer, give zakat, fast Ramadan, and perform pilgrimage to the House if you are able to find a way to it.” In this hadith Islam is explained as these five pillars, yet the narration from Ibn Umar clarifies that they are the very foundations of Islam, for it begins: “Buniya …” (“Islam has been built upon…”).
