Sharh Thalathat al-UsulSalih Al-Fawzan

It is to surrender oneself to Allah through tawḥīd (pure monotheism), to submit to Him by obediently carrying out His commands and avoiding His prohibitions, and to repudiate shirk (idolatry) and its adherents ⦗28⦘.

(27) One must rely on proofs taken from the Quran and the Sunnah. A person who does not learn his religion but merely imitates others—becoming a blind follower—will never truly know his faith. Such a person is likely to answer in the grave, “Hah, hah; I do not know. I heard the people say something, so I repeated it.” It is therefore obligatory for every Muslim to know his religion through evidence from the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger, and this knowledge is acquired only through study. (28) The word “Islam” comes from the verb aslama, meaning “to submit” or “to surrender.” One may say, “He aslama himself to death,” that is, he yielded to being killed; so to aslama oneself to something is to yield to it. Islam, therefore, is the surrender of one’s face, intention, and purpose to Allah: “Who is better in religion than the one who submits his face to Allah while acting righteously and following the way of Ibrahim, the upright?” (Quran 4:125); and, “Indeed, whoever submits his face to Allah…” (Quran 2:112)—meaning that he dedicates his deeds purely to Allah, submitting to Him willingly, by choice, out of desire and love.
