Sharh Thalathat al-UsulSalih Al-Fawzan

Turning in repentance (inābah) and its proof:

The proof for turning in repentance is Allah’s—exalted is He—statement: “So turn in repentance to your Lord and submit to Him.” (Az-Zumar 39:54) [20].

(19) The elite among creation—angels, messengers, awliya (saints) and the righteous—attain an extraordinary degree of khashyah (reverent awe), khawf (fear) and rahbah (dread) of Allah. Although these three terms differ slightly in scope, they share the common reality of fearing Allah. Such fear characterises the prophets and the pious servants of Allah; it is a major form of worship and an inner act of the heart known only to Him. (20) Inabah (turning back) signifies returning and is essentially the same as tawbah (repentance). Some scholars, however, regard inabah as more specific and therefore more emphatic: it is repentance accompanied by a wholehearted turning toward Allah. A person may repent, abandon the sin and regret it, yet his orientation toward Allah may remain weak; inabah, by contrast, combines repentance with sincere devotion to Allah. Hence the verse: “Turn back to your Lord and submit to Him” (al-Zumar 39:54), meaning: return to Him and approach Him with full surrender.
