Reliance upon Allah and its Evidence
The evidence for tawakkul (placing one’s trust in Allah) is the Almighty’s statement: “So put your trust in Allah if you are truly believers.” (Al-Ma’idah 5:23) ⦗17⦘.
(17) Tawakkul (reliance and total entrustment) means handing one’s affairs over to Allah and depending upon Him alone. It is among the greatest forms of worship; hence the verse: “And upon Allah put your tawakkul, if you are believers.” The prepositional phrase “upon Allah” is placed first to indicate exclusivity—reliance must be on Him and no one else. By adding “if you are believers,” the verse makes tawakkul a condition of true faith and implies that whoever fails to rely on Allah is not a believer in the full sense. One of Allah’s names is al-Wakil (the Trustee to whom His servants consign their matters); therefore tawakkul can be directed only to Him. Saying, “I rely on so-and-so” is impermissible, because reliance is an act of worship reserved for Allah. When a responsibility is given to a human being, this is not tawakkul but tawkil (agency), that is, appointing someone to act on one’s behalf.
