Fear—its categories and its proof
The evidence for fear is the Almighty’s words: “It is only Satan who frightens his allies, so do not fear them; rather, fear Me, if you are believers” (Āl ʿImrān 175). [15]
(15) Khawf (fear) is one of the acts of worship and is, like khashya (awe), raghba (longing), rahba (dread), rajaʾ (hope) and tawakkul (reliance), a devotion of the heart.
Fear is the expectation of something disliked and it appears in two forms:
1. Fear that is an act of worship; 2. Natural, instinctive fear.
1. Fear as worship: directing this kind of fear to anyone other than Allah is major shirk, for it means fearing a creature regarding matters that only Allah can bring about—such as illness, the taking of a soul, the death of one’s child, and the like. Many uninformed people fear for their pregnant wives or their children from the jinn, from sorcerers, or from the dead, and they perform idolatrous practices in the hope of escaping that fear. Yet illness, death, provision and the ending of life-spans, as well as the granting of blessing and similar matters, are in the power of Allah alone.

ودليل الخوف قوله تعالى: ﴿إِنَّمَا ذَلِكُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ يُخَوِّفُ أَوْلِيَاءَهُ فَلَا تَخَافُوهُمْ وَخَافُونِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ﴾ [آل عمران:١٧٥] . [١٥]
[١٥] الخوف نوع من أنواع العبادة وهو عبادة قلبية، وكذلك الخوف والخشية والرغبة والرهبة والرجاء والتوكل كل هذه عبادات قلبية.
والخوف: هو توقع المكروه، وهو نوعان:
خوف العبادة، والخوف الطبيعي.
النوع الأول: خوف العبادة، هذا صرفه لغير الله شرك، وذلك بأن يخاف غير الله فيما لا يقدر عليه إلا الله، كأن يخاف أحدًا أن يمرضه، أو أن يقبض روحه، أو يميت ولده، كما يفعل كثير من الجهال، يخافون على حمل زوجاتهم وعلى أولادهم من الجن، يخافون من السحرة، أو من الموتى، فيعملون أعمالًا شركية لأجل أن يتخلصوا من هذا الخوف، فهذا لا يقدر عليه إلا الله، الأمراض والموت والرزق وقطع الأجل، هذه أمور لا يقدر عليها إلا الله ﷿، وكذلك إنزال البركة أو غير ذلك، هذه أمور لا تكون إلا من
