Another poet says:
Were people asked for nothing but dust, they would soon—
the moment they were told, “Give!”—grow tired and hold back.
People therefore fall into three categories:
- One who never calls upon Allah at all; such a person is too arrogant to worship Him.
- One who does call upon Allah, yet invokes others alongside Him; such a person is a polytheist.
- One who calls upon Allah alone, devoting every supplication sincerely to Him; such a person is a true monotheist.
In the hadith the Prophet ﷺ said, “Supplication is the marrow of worship,” and in another wording, “Supplication is worship.” This demonstrates the lofty rank of supplication and that it constitutes the greatest form of worship, for the Messenger ﷺ described it as “the marrow of worship.”
