Supplication: its categories and its proof
Among these acts are supplication, fear, hope, reliance, yearning, awe, humility, penitence, seeking help, seeking refuge, as well as slaughtering and making vows, and every other type of worship that Allah has commanded—all of them must be directed exclusively to Allah, the Exalted. ⦗12⦘
(12) The words “and among them is supplication” indicate that dua’ (supplication) is itself a form of worship; the author mentions it first because it is the greatest of all devotional acts.
Dua’ is divided into two categories:
1. Dua’ al-‘ibadah (supplication of worship): this consists of praising Allah, as in the opening of Surah al-Fatiha—“al-hamdu lillahi rabb al-‘alamin, ar-Rahman ar-Rahim, Maliki yawm al-din, iyyaka na‘budu wa iyyaka nasta‘in.” All of these phrases are praise and therefore belong to this category.
2. Dua’ al-mas’ala (supplication of request): this is to ask Allah for something, exemplified by the continuation of al-Fatiha, “ihdina s-sirata l-mustaqim…” to the end of the surah. Such requests include asking for guidance, provision, knowledge, or success.
الدعاء أقسامه ودليله
وَمِنْهُ الدُّعَاءُ، وَالْخَوْفُ، وَالرَّجَاءُ وَالتَّوَكُّلُ، وَالرَّغْبَةُ، وَالرَّهْبَةُ، والخشوع، والإنابة، والاستعانة، والاستعاذة، وَالذَّبْحُ، وَالنَّذْرُ، وَغَيْرُ ذَلَكَ مِنْ أَنْوَاعِ الْعِبَادَةِ الَّتِي أَمَرَ اللهُ بِهَا - كُلُّهَا للهِ تَعَالَى [١٢]
[١٢] قوله: ومنه الدعاء: أي ومن أنواع العبادة الدعاء، بدأ به لأنه أعظم أنواع العبادة.
والدعاء على قسمين:
دعاء عبادة، ودعاء مسألة:
دعاء العبادة: هو الثناء على الله ﷾ كما في أول الفاتحة: ﴿الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ مَالِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ﴾ هذا كله دعاء عبادة، ﴿اهْدِنَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ﴾ إلى آخر السورة هذا دعاء مسألة.
ودعاء المسألة: هو طلب شيء من الله ﷿ كطلب الهداية، وطلب الرزق، وطلب العلم من الله، وطلب التوفيق.
