contradictions of the same kind found in the words of al-Ash‘arī, Judge Abū Bakr al-Bāqillānī, Abū al-Ma‘ālī, and others like them who agree with those who negate Allah’s attributes in their negation, while also sharing the position of those who affirm them, in a way that the majority regard as combining two mutually contradictory positions.”1.
I say: This quotation exposes the writer’s lies, slander, and fabrications against Shaykh al-Islām—may Allah have mercy on him. The matter needs no further explanation: Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah did not agree with Abū Ya‘lā in everything he said, and he made clear that what Ibn al-‘Arabī had transmitted was false. Abū Ya‘lā was not Shaykh al-Islām’s imam, as the writer claimed.
As for Judge Abū Ya‘lā—may Allah have mercy on him—he states at the end of his book Ibtāl al-Ta’wīlāt (Refutation of Figurative Interpretations), in his defence against accusations of attributing a body to Allah, likening Him to His creation, and other charges:
“… Not content with the lies and slanders they had fabricated against us, they went on to accuse us of attributing a body to Allah, likening Him to His creation, and disbelief, because of what we related concerning the attributes conveyed in the Quran and transmitted reports. Allah Most High says:
‘How can you disbelieve when Allah’s verses are recited to you and His Messenger is in your midst? Whoever holds firmly to Allah has indeed been guided to a straight path.’ 2
How, then, can we be declared disbelievers when we base our arguments on the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger? Rather, we hold firmly to Allah, as Allah Most High has commanded us, so that we may be guided to the straight path. Yet Allah—exalted be His praise—has left no scholar in any age without some ignorant person who wrongs him out of envy and malice, so that He may thereby test his gratitude and patience and increase his reward and recompense. He Most High has said:
‘Thus have We made for every prophet an enemy from among the criminals.’ 3
And He Most High has said:
‘You will surely be tested in your wealth and your lives, and you will surely hear from
