carry Him by their own strength, nor did they uphold His Throne unaided; rather, they bore it by His power1.
It has reached us that when they bore the Throne, with the Compeller above it in His might and splendour, they were too weak to bear it, humbled themselves, and sank to their knees until they were taught to say: “There is no might or power except through Allah.” They then bore it by Allah’s power and will. Were it not for that, neither the Throne nor its bearers, nor the heavens and the earth, nor anyone within them could bear Him. Had He so willed, He would have settled upon the back of a mosquito, and it would have borne Him by His power and the subtlety of His lordship. How much more so, then, upon a mighty Throne larger than the heavens and the earth! How can you deny, you boastful babbler, that His Throne bears Him, when the Throne is larger than the seven heavens and the seven earths? Were the Throne within the heavens and the earths, they could not contain it; rather, it is above the seventh heaven.
How, then, can you deny this when you claim that Allah is on earth, in all its places, although the earth is smaller and less spacious than the Throne? How, according to your claim, can the earth bear Him, but not the Throne, which is larger and more spacious than it? Apply to yourself and your companions, regarding the earth and its smallness, the same analogy you brought against us concerning the Throne’s size, whether small or large. You may then recognize your ignorance and see what the harvest of your tongue brings upon you, for every argument you advance rebounds upon you and seizes you by the throat.’”
This passage appears in full in Imām al-Dārimī’s refutation of Bishr al-Marīsī, pages (85, 86). The editor of Naqd al-Ta’sīs indicated in a footnote where the passage is found in al-Dārimī’s book. Nevertheless, neither this writer nor his teacher al-Kawtharī before him refrained
1 For He—glory be to Him—upholds the heavens and the earth lest they cease to be, and holds back the sky from falling upon the earth except by His permission. Among His signs is that the heaven and the earth stand by His command. He has no need of anything besides Him, whereas everything besides Him depends upon Him in every respect. He has no need of the Throne or anything beneath it, while all creation needs Him—blessed and exalted is He.
