, the Provider, and the Disposer of affairs], why is anyone else worshipped? Why is trust placed in anyone else? Just as He alone holds sovereignty, let Him alone be worshipped. The Most High often establishes His exclusive right to worship through the acknowledgment of His sole lordship.” This occurs frequently in the Quran, as Ibn Kathīr—may Allah have mercy on him—mentioned. Among such passages are the words of the Most High:

“Indeed this, your religion, is one religion, and I am your Lord, so worship Me.” 1

And His words:

“O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, so that you may become righteous—He who made the earth a resting place for you and the sky a canopy, and sent down rain from the sky, bringing forth fruits as provision for you. So do not set up rivals to Allah while you know.” 2

That is: do not associate partners with Allah in worship when you know that you have no creator other than Allah. Ibn ʿAbbās and others have already been quoted explaining this verse in this sense.

Thus, Allah’s reminding people of His signs in the Quran and commanding them to reflect upon them has its significance: for anyone who understands, such consideration and reflection necessarily entail worshipping Him alone and devoting religion sincerely to Him. Just as He has no partner in sovereignty and creation—a fact acknowledged by everyone except those whom Allah wills—so too He has no partner in obedience and worship.

Shaykh al-Islām said: “… This is why the messengers were sent only to call them to worship Allah alone, with no partner. This is the intended goal, which necessarily entails acknowledging His lordship. He has told us concerning them: ‘If you ask them who created them, they will surely say, “Allah.”’ 3 He has also told us that when harm befalls them, all those they invoke are forgotten except Him. And He says: ‘And when waves like canopies cover them, they call upon Allah with sincere devotion to Him alone.’ 4 Thus He tells us that they acknowledge His lordship and that they devote their worship sincerely to Him
