Al-Qawl al-Sadid fi al-Radd ala Man Ankara Taqsim al-TawhidAbd al-Razzaq ibn Abd al-Muhsin al-Badr

I have quoted his words in full because of their importance. In this passage, he—may Allah have mercy on him—pointed out that the three categories of monotheism are derived from a systematic survey of the texts of the Noble Quran. It is thus clear that this classification is among the truths established by revelation and derived from the Book of Allah Most High, not a terminological convention devised by some scholars1.

(1) This reveals the error in what Dr. Salāh al-Sāwī, author of al-Thawābit wa-l-mutaghayyirāt fī masīrat al-'amal al-Islāmī al-mu'āsir (Constants and Variables in the Course of Contemporary Islamic Work), maintains when he states (p. 154): “This classification is conventional; its purpose is to make the subject accessible and organize its study, just as scholars have adopted conventional names for the various disciplines… Accordingly, there should be no dispute over terminology. There are no dividing lines between what falls under tawhīd al-rubūbiyya (Allah’s oneness in lordship), what falls under tawhīd al-ulūhiyya (Allah’s oneness in worship), and what falls under tawhīd al-asmā' wa-l-sifāt (Allah’s oneness in His names and attributes). Indeed, to our knowledge, no unambiguous Quranic verse or sunnah to be followed lays down this classification in this form in the first place. What matters, as they say, is intent and meaning, not wording and form. Although scholars’ continued use of this classification and its establishment over many centuries make it part of the Salafī heritage, it should be accepted provided that it does not itself become a basis for walā' and barā' (allegiance and disavowal).” Thus he—may Allah set him right—treated this classification as a matter of convention, rather than a scriptural truth derived through a survey and inductive examination of the texts of the Quran and sunnah. He went further still in falsehood when he said: “There are no dividing lines between what falls under tawhīd al-rubūbiyya, what falls under tawhīd al-ulūhiyya, and what falls under tawhīd al-asmā' wa-l-sifāt.” I am utterly astonished that someone who undertakes to guide the course of contemporary Islamic work should say this, when he himself, as he explicitly states here, knows of no dividing lines between the three types of tawhīd. What greater wrong could be done to the course of Islamic work than to spread among Muslims the claims that the categories of tawhīd are not fixed principles; that they are not matters on which allegiance and disavowal are founded; that they are not set out in any unambiguous Quranic verse or sunnah to be followed; that there are no dividing lines between these categories; and that they are conventions adopted by some scholars, with no grounds for dispute over terminology? Does this not undermine unity, weaken belief, and diminish the importance of tawhīd? Allah is the One whose help is sought; He is sufficient for us and the best One in whom to place our trust. The aforementioned book contains numerous errors of this kind, but this is not the place to discuss them.
