worship with sincerity, in the manner He prescribed through His messengers, peace and blessings be upon them. Most verses of the Quran concern this kind of oneness, and it is over this that the messengers and their peoples came into conflict:
‘Has he made the gods one God? Indeed, this is an astonishing thing.’1
Among the verses indicating this kind of oneness are the words of Allah, the Exalted:
‘So know that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and ask forgiveness for your sin…’2—the verse continues.
And His words:
‘And We certainly sent to every nation a messenger, saying, “Worship Allah and shun false objects of worship.”’3—the verse continues.
And His words:
‘And We sent no messenger before you except that We revealed to him, “There is no deity worthy of worship except Me, so worship Me.”’4
And His words:
‘And ask those of Our messengers whom We sent before you: “Have We appointed gods besides the Most Merciful to be worshipped?”’5
And His words:
‘Say, “It is only revealed to me that your God is one God. Will you then submit to Him?”’6
Thus, in this noble verse, the Prophet was commanded to say that what was revealed to him is confined to this kind of oneness, for the declaration ‘There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah’ encompasses everything contained in the scriptures, since it requires obedience to Allah by worshipping Him alone. This includes all beliefs, commands and prohibitions, and the reward and punishment that follow from them. The verses concerning this kind of oneness are numerous.
