952 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; al-Hasan ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz al-Jarawi narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Yusuf al-Dimashqi narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from Bilal ibn Abi al-Dardaʾ, that his mother ʿAththāmah lost her sight. One day her son entered upon her after he had performed the prayer. She asked, “Have you prayed, my son?” He replied, “Yes.” Thereupon she recited:
Aththāmah, what ails you, heedless one?
A grievous blow has struck your very home.
If ever you must weep, then weep for the prayer kept at its proper time;
And weep for the Quran when it is being recited—
You were once among those who recited it,
Reciting with reflection while tears streamed from your eyes.
But today you can no longer recite it yourself
Except when someone beside you recites.
Alas for you! My yearning sorrow for you
Will endure for as long as I live.
