944 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; al-Hasan ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz al-Misri related to me; ʿAmr ibn Abi Salamah narrated, saying: I heard Saʿid ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz say, “We do not know of anyone who has seen the ḥūr al-ʿayn (the wide-eyed maidens of Paradise) with his waking eyes—only in a dream—except for Abu Makhramah. One day he entered to relieve himself and saw a fair-eyed maiden inside her pavilion, seated upon her couch. When he beheld her he turned his face away. She said, ‘Come to me, O Abu Makhramah, for I am your wife, and this is the wife of so-and-so.’ He then returned to his companions and informed them. They immediately wrote their wills, and not a single man who wrote his will failed to be martyred.”
