96. ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Zayd ibn Yaḥyā al-Dimashqī narrated to us; Khālid ibn Ṣubayḥ narrated to us; ⦗19⦘ Yūnus ibn Ḥalbas narrated to us, saying: Abū Muslim al-Khawlānī said:

“Renunciation of the world is not achieved by declaring the lawful to be unlawful, nor by wasting one’s wealth. Genuine renunciation is to put greater trust in what lies with Allah than in what lies in your own hands, and that, when calamity strikes, you look forward to its reward and stored treasure with Allah even more than you would have valued the very thing had it remained yours.”
