Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

922 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Abu Maʿmar narrated to us; Jarir narrated to us, from Shaybah ibn Niʿāmah, who said:

People used to think that ʿAli ibn al-Husayn—peace be upon him—was miserly, but when he passed away they discovered that he had been providing for one hundred households in Madinah. Jarir added, either in this report or elsewhere: when he died they found marks on his back from the sacks he used to carry by night to the poor.
