904 – ʿAbd Allah related to us; my father narrated to me; Abū ʿUbaydah al-Haddād narrated to us, from al-Mughīrah ibn Salm, from Saʿīd ibn Masrūq, who said:
During the time of Ibn Masʿūd the dahāqīn—Persian landowners—came to Kūfah, and people began to marvel at their robust health and fine complexion. Ibn Masʿūd said, “What astonishes you? You will meet the believer whose heart is the soundest of all hearts while his body is the sickest of all bodies, and you will meet the wicked person and the hypocrite whose body is the soundest of all bodies while his heart is the sickest of all hearts. By Allah, were your bodies to be sound while your hearts were diseased, you would be of less worth to Allah than dung beetles.”
