903 – ʿAbd Allah related to us; my father narrated to me; Hisham ibn ʿAbd al-Malik narrated to us; Abu ʿAwanah narrated to us; from al-Aswad ibn Maysarah; from Zahr ibn Rabiʿah, who said: ʿAbd Allah declared: “By Him in Whose Hand lies the soul of ʿAbd Allah, there is no soul on earth that truly recognizes how severe Allah’s punishment can be without its eye continuing to shed tears until it knows whether that punishment has struck it or whether it has been spared. And there is no soul on earth that realizes how vast Allah’s mercy is without rejoicing and longing that such mercy should reach it.”
