Al-Aʿmash narrated from ʿAmr, from al-Ḥārith ibn al-Azmaʿ, who said: al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah was astonished at ʿAbd Allah’s statement, ‘Yesterday is better than today, today is better than tomorrow, and tomorrow is better than the day after tomorrow—and so it will continue until the Day of Resurrection—even though this year we are enjoying greater prosperity than the previous one.’ When this was reported to Masrūq, he said, ‘ʿAbd Allah knows better than he does. ʿAbd Allah judged matters by the Hereafter, whereas al-Mughīrah judged them by the life of this world.’
