855 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Rahman narrated to us, from Hammad ibn Salamah, from ʿAtaʾ ibn al-Saʾib, from ʿAmr ibn Maymun, from Ibn Masʿud—may Allah have mercy on him—who said:

“Satan circled around a gathering devoted to dhikr (remembrance of Allah), seeking to tempt them, but he could find no way to sow division among them. He then came upon another circle whose members were speaking about the dunya (worldly affairs); there he incited them against one another until they came to blows. The people of dhikr rose, placed themselves between the combatants, and the disputants dispersed.”
