854 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Israel narrated to us, from Saʿid ibn Masruq, from al-Musayyab ibn Rafiʿ. Abu Iyas al-Bajali related to me, saying: I heard ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿud say:

“Whoever seeks to elevate himself out of arrogance, Allah will abase him; and whoever humbles himself before Allah in reverent submission, Allah will exalt him. The angel has a prompting, and Satan has a prompting. The angel’s prompting is a promise of goodness and an affirmation of truth—so when you notice that, praise Allah. Satan’s prompting is a promise of evil and a denial of truth—so when you notice that, seek refuge in Allah, the Mighty, the Majestic.”
