825 – ʿAbd Allah related it to us; my father related it to me; Abu Muʿāwiyah related it to us; al-Aʿmash related it to us, from Abū Sufyān, from his elders, who said:

Saʿd once entered upon Salmān to visit him during an illness. Salmān began to weep, whereupon Saʿd said, “O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, what makes you cry? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away pleased with you. You will be admitted to him at the Basin, and you will meet your companions.”

Salmān replied, “By Allah, I am not weeping out of panic at death, nor out of longing for worldly life. Rather, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made us pledge, saying, ‘Let the share any one of you takes from this world be no more than the provisions of a traveller.’ Yet look at these things around me!”

(The narrator adds: what was around him was only an injānah —a small pot—, a jafnah —a large bowl—, and a maṭharah —a water vessel for purification.)

Saʿd then said, “O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, leave us some parting advice that we may hold to after you.”

He said, “O Saʿd, remember Allah when you resolve to undertake something, remember Him with your hand when you distribute (wealth), and remember Him in your judgment when you pass judgment.”
