Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

815 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us, my father narrated to me, Sayyār narrated to us, Jaʿfar narrated to us, Hishām narrated to us, and al-Ḥasan said: “Salman’s—may Allah have mercy on him—official stipend was five thousand dirhams. He was the amir (governor) of roughly thirty thousand Muslims, yet he would deliver the Friday sermon in a coarse cloak, spreading part of it on the ground and wrapping himself with the rest. Whenever his stipend arrived, he would give it all away, and he lived on what his own hands earned from safīf (the simple mats he wove).”
