Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal
  1. ʿAbd Allah narrated to us—my father narrated to me; Yazīd narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr informed us, from Abū Bakr ibn al-Munkadir, who said:

Habīb ibn Abī Salamah, who at that time was the governor of al-Shām, sent Abu Dharr three hundred dinars with the message, “Use them to meet your needs.” Abu Dharr (may Allah have mercy on him) replied, “Send them back to him. Could he not find anyone more self-deluded about Allah than we are? We own nothing but a patch of shade to conceal ourselves, a small flock of sheep that returns to us at dusk, and a maidservant who shows us charity through her service—yet I still fear the excess.”
