793. ʿAbd Allāh related to us—my father related to me; Yazīd related to us; Hammām informed us, from Qatādah, from Saʿīd ibn Abī l-Ḥasan, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ṣāmit, who said:

I was with Abū Dharr (may Allah have mercy on him) when his government stipend was handed over to him. A maidservant of his was accompanying him, and he began to settle his various needs. When he had finished, there was some money left over—I think he said it was seven (dīnārs). He instructed her to buy fulūs (copper coins) with it.

I said, “Abū Dharr, why not save it for an unexpected need or for a guest who might visit you?”

He replied, “My close friend—the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him—made a covenant with me that any gold or silver that is hoarded in a tied-up pouch will become a burning ember upon its owner on the Day of Resurrection, until he has poured it out completely in the path of Allah.”
