Report 81: ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; my father narrated to us; Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿAlqamah al-Laythī narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather ʿAlqamah, from Bilāl ibn al-Ḥārith al-Muzanī, who said:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“A man may utter a word that earns Allah’s good pleasure, never imagining that it will reach as far as it does; yet because of it Allah records for him His pleasure until the day he meets Him. And a man may utter a word that incurs Allah’s wrath, never imagining that it will reach as far as it does; yet because of it Allah records against him His wrath until the Day of Resurrection.”
ʿAlqamah would remark, “How many statements has the report of Bilāl ibn al-Ḥārith kept me from uttering!”
