775 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said, “A certain man related to me who had heard al-Walid ibn Muslim say: I heard Saʿid ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz state, ‘Zubayr ibn al-ʿAwwam—may Allah have mercy on him—owned a thousand slaves who brought him their kharāj (tribute earnings). Yet every single night he would distribute the entire amount, and then he would retire to his house without retaining so much as a coin of it.’”
