ʿAbd Allah related to us; he said: my father related to me; Maʿmar ibn Sulayman al-Raqqī related to us; Furat ibn Sulayman related to us that Abu al-Dardaʾ used to say:
“Woe to every hoarder, mouth agape, like a madman who keeps his eyes on what other people possess while paying no heed to what he himself has. If he could, he would join night to day without rest. Ruin to him for the harsh reckoning and the severe punishment that await him.
He also used to say: ‘I welcome death, though they detest it; I welcome illness, though they detest it; I welcome poverty, though they detest it. They pinned their hopes on a distant future, amassed great wealth, and built sturdy structures—only for their hope to turn into delusion, their hoard into loss, and their homes into graves.’”
