Hadith 763: ʿAbd Allah related to us, saying: my father related to me; al-Walid ibn Muslim related to us, from Safwan ibn ʿAmr and ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr, from his father. Al-Walid added: Thawr also narrated to me, from Khalid ibn Maʿdan, from Jubayr ibn Nufayr, who said:
“When Cyprus was conquered and its inhabitants were dispersed—each party weeping for the others—I saw Abu al-Dardaʾ sitting by himself, weeping. I asked, ‘O Abu al-Dardaʾ, what makes you weep on a day when Allah has honored Islam and its people?’
He replied, ‘Alas, O Jubayr! How insignificant people become in Allah’s sight when they abandon His command. Not long ago they were a dominant, victorious nation, masters of their realm; then they forsook the command of Allah, and they have ended up as you now behold.’”
