- ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Sayyār narrated to us; Jaʿfar narrated to us; Thābit narrated, saying:
Yazīd ibn Muʿāwiyah sought Abu al-Dardāʾ’s daughter in marriage, but Abu al-Dardāʾ refused him. One of Yazīd’s companions then said, “May Allah set you right, will you allow me to marry her?” Abu al-Dardāʾ replied, “Stay single, wretch!” The man repeated, “Will you permit me, may Allah set you right?” Abu al-Dardāʾ answered, “Yes.” The man formally proposed, and Abu al-Dardāʾ married his daughter to him.
The incident spread among the people: Yazīd had asked for Abu al-Dardāʾ’s daughter and been turned down, whereas a man from the poorer Muslims had asked and been married to her. Abu al-Dardāʾ explained, “I acted in Dardāʾ’s best interest. What do you imagine would become of Dardāʾ if eunuchs were standing over her head and her eyes were roaming over palaces whose very brilliance dazzles the sight? Where would her religion be on such a day?”
