ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Hāshim narrated to us; Ḥarīz narrated from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī ʿAwf, who said:
Abū al-Dardāʾ said:
“Doubt springs from unbelief; wailing over the dead is a practice of the Age of Ignorance; poetry is the flutes of Iblīs; ghulūl (embezzling from the communal spoils) is a live coal from Hell; wine is the root of every sin; youth is a branch of madness; women are the snares of Satan; arrogance is evil piled upon evil; the worst food one can eat is the property of an orphan; the worst earnings are those gained through usury; the truly fortunate is the one who takes admonition from the fate of others, and the truly wretched is the one doomed while still in his mother’s womb.”
