- ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me. ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿAmr also related it, saying: Ismaʿil ibn Muslim al-ʿAbdi told us, from Abu al-Mutawakkil al-Naji, that Abu al-Dardaʾ once had a young female slave. One day his son slapped her. He seated the boy before her and said, “Exact your retaliation.” She answered, “I have pardoned him.” He replied, “If you have truly pardoned him, then go and summon whoever from the Banu Haram is present and have them witness that you have forgiven.” She went, called them, and had them testify that she had pardoned him. He then said, “Go, for you are free for the sake of Allah. Would that the household of Abu al-Dardaʾ might leave this world having neither debts nor claims upon anyone.”
