Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal

ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father told me; Wakiʿ related to us, from Israʾil, from Abu Ishaq, from ʿAmr ibn Ḥabashi, who said:

After the martyrdom of ʿAli—may Allah honor his countenance—al-Hasan ibn ʿAli—may Allah be pleased with him—addressed us, saying:

“A trustworthy man has departed from your midst. None of the earlier generations outstripped him in knowledge, nor will those who come later ever reach his level. Whenever the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent him forth and placed the banner in his hand, he would not return until victory had been granted to him. He left behind neither gold nor silver, save seven hundred dirhams from his stipend, which he had been setting aside to purchase a servant for his household.”
