- ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Surayj ibn Yunus told me, saying: ʿAli ibn Hashim related to us, from Salih the cloak-seller, from his mother—or his grandmother—who said: “I saw ʿAli ibn Abi Talib—may Allah honor his countenance—purchase dates for a single dirham. He wrapped them in his cloak and carried them himself. People said, ‘Allow us to carry it for you, O Commander of the Believers.’ He replied, ‘No. The head of a household is the one who should carry it.’”}
٧٠٩ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي سُرَيْجُ بْنُ يُونُسَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ هَاشِمٍ، عَنْ صَالِحٍ بَيَّاعِ الْأَكْسِيَةِ، عَنْ أُمِّهِ، أَوْ جَدَّتِهِ قَالَتْ: رَأَيْتُ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ (رضي الله عنه) اشْتَرَى تَمْرًا بِدِرْهَمٍ فَحَمَلَهُ فِي مِلْحَفَةٍ فَقَالُوا نَحْمِلُ عَنْكَ يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ قَالَ: لَا أَبُو الْعِيَالِ أَحَقُّ أَنْ يَحْمِلَ "
