- ʿAbd Allah reported to us; Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Azdi related to me; al-Walid ibn al-Qasim narrated to us—and so did Matir ibn Thaʿlaba al-Taymi—who said: Abu al-Nawwar, the vendor of karābis (coarse linen shirts), said:
“ʿAli ibn Abi Talib—may Allah honor his countenance—came to me with a young servant of his. He bought from me two karābis shirts, then said to the servant, ‘Choose whichever one you prefer.’ The boy took one, and ʿAli took the other and put it on. He then stretched out his hand and said, ‘Cut off whatever extends beyond the length of my arms.’ The servant trimmed and hemmed it, and ʿAli wore it and went on his way.”
