Report 73: ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; my father narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Ṣamad and Abū Saʿīd—both conveying the same meaning—narrated to us. They said: Thābit narrated to us; Hilāl narrated to us; from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās:
The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was once visited by ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, may Allah be pleased with him, while the Prophet was lying on a woven mat whose texture had left marks on his side. ʿUmar said, “O Prophet of Allah, if only you would take a mattress that is softer than this.” He replied, “What have I to do with the life of this world? My likeness in relation to the world is only that of a traveler who rode on a scorching summer day, paused to rest for a while in the shade of a tree, and then set out again, leaving it behind.”
