ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Abu ʿAmr al-Azdi, Nasr ibn ʿAli, narrated to me; Bishr—meaning Ibn al-Fadl—narrated to us, from Abu Harun al-Ghanawi, from Hittan ibn ʿAbd Allah who said: ʿAli—may Allah’s mercy be upon him—asked, “Do you know what the gates of Jahannam (Hell) are like?” We replied, “They are like these doors here.” He said, “No; rather, they are like this,” and he placed one hand on top of the other, whereupon Abu ʿUmar spread his own hand over his to illustrate the gesture.
