687 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father narrated to me; Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us; Hisham informed us, saying: My father related to me from ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, who said:
“I said to ʿUthman—may Allah be pleased with him—on the day his house was besieged, ‘May Allah fight them! By Allah, He has made it lawful for you to fight them.’ He replied, ‘No, by Allah, I will never fight them.’ They then forced their way in and killed him while he was fasting.
ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr added: ʿUthman had appointed me to oversee the house, and he declared, ‘Whoever owes me obedience, let him obey ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Zubayr.’”
