Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal
  1. ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn told me; Hishām ibn Yūsuf related, on the authority of ʿAbd Allah ibn Baḥīr al-Qāṣṣ, from Hāniʾ, the freedman of ʿUthmān. He said: Whenever ʿUthmān (may Allah be pleased with him) paused at a grave he would weep until his beard was soaked. Someone said to him, “You recollect Paradise without weeping, yet you weep because of this?” He replied, “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘The grave is the first station of the Hereafter. Whoever is saved from it, everything that follows will be easier for him; but whoever is not saved from it, everything that follows will be more severe.’”
