677. ʿAbd Allah narrated to us—Abu ʿAmir al-ʿAdawi, Hawtharah ibn Ashtar ibn ʿAwn ibn Yahbush ibn Maḥsharān ibn al-Rabīʿ, told me. He said: Jaʿfar ibn Kaysan, Abu Maʿruf, related to me from ʿAmrah bint Qays al-ʿAdawiyyah, who said:

“I set out with ʿAʾishah—may Allah have mercy on her—the year ʿUthman was killed, heading for Mecca. When we passed through Madinah we were shown the codex that was in his lap when he was struck down. The very first drop of his blood fell on this verse: ‘So Allah will suffice you against them; He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing’ (Surah al-Baqarah, 2:137).” ʿAmrah added, “Not one of those men died a normal, sound death.”
