- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar ibn Muḥammad ibn Abān ibn Ṣāliḥ ibn ʿUmayr related to me; Ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us, from al-Zubayr ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: My grandfather told me that ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān—may Allah have mercy on him—would never rouse anyone in his household during the night unless he found that person already awake. When he did find someone awake, he would call him over and hand him the water for his wuduʾ (ritual ablution). He was also known to fast continuously throughout the year.
