- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; my father related to me; ʿAbd al-Ṣamad conveyed to us; Abū Jamīʿ transmitted; al-Ḥasan said—mentioning ʿUthmān and the remarkable extent of his modesty—that: “He would at times be inside the house with the door shut, yet he still would not remove his garment to let water run over him; his modesty would not allow him even to stand upright.”
٦٦٨ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي أبِي، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو جَمِيعٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ قَالَ وَذَكَرَ عُثْمَانَ وَشِدَّةَ حَيَائِهِ فَقَالَ: «إِنْ كَانَ لَيَكُونُ فِي الْبَيْتِ وَالْبَابُ عَلَيْهِ مُغْلَقٌ فَمَا يَضَعُ عَنْهُ الثَّوْبَ لِيُفِيضَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَاءَ يَمْنَعُهُ الْحَيَاءُ أَنْ يُقِيمَ صُلْبَهُ»
