- ʿAbdullāh narrated to us; Shujāʿ ibn al-Walīd related to me, from Khalaf ibn Ḥawshab, that ʿUmar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “I reflected on this matter and found that whenever I seek the life of this world I end up harming my share in the Hereafter, and whenever I seek the Hereafter I harm my share of this world. Since the situation is thus, then let the harm fall upon that which is destined to perish.”
٦٦٥ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي شُجَاعُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، عَنْ خَلَفِ بْنِ حَوْشَبٍ، إِنَّ عُمَرَ (رحمه الله) قَالَ: «نَظَرْتُ فِي هَذَا الْأَمْرِ فَجَعَلْتُ إِذَا أَرَدْتُ الدُّنْيَا أَضْرَرْتُ بِالْآخِرَةِ وَإِذَا أَرَدْتُ الْآخِرَةَ أَضْرَرْتُ بِالدُّنْيَا، فَإِذَا كَانَ الْأَمْرُ هَكَذَا فَأَضِرُّوا بِالْفَانِيَةِ»
