- ʿAbdullāh narrated to us; my father related to me; Yazīd transmitted to us; Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid informed us, from Muṣʿab ibn Saʿd, who said: Ḥafṣah bint ʿUmar once said, “O Amīr al-Muʾminīn (Commander of the Believers), why not put on a garment softer than the one you are wearing and eat food finer than the food you eat? Allah has indeed widened the provision and increased the bounty.” He replied, “I shall argue with you before your own self. Do you not remember the hardship the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, endured in his daily living?” He kept reminding her of this until she wept, and then he added, “By Allah, if I am able, I will most certainly share with the two of them in the severity of their life, in the hope that I might share with them the ease of their life to come.”
٦٦٠ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي أبِي، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ، أَنْبَأَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ أَبِي خَالِدٍ، عَنْ مُصْعَبِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ: قَالَتْ حَفْصَةُ بِنْتُ عُمَرَ: «يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، لَوْ لَبِسْتَ ثَوْبًا هُوَ أَلْيَنُ مِنْ ثَوْبِكَ وَأَكَلْتَ طَعَامًا هُوَ أَطْيَبُ مِنْ طَعَامِكَ فَقَدْ وَسَّعَ اللَّهُ – Exalté soit-Il – مِنَ الرِّزْقِ وَأَكْثَرَ مِنَ الْخَيْرِ» قَالَ: إِنِّي سَأَخْصِمُكِ إِلَى نَفْسِكِ، أَمَا تَذْكُرِينَ مَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَلْقَى مِنْ شِدَّةِ الْعَيْشِ " فَمَا زَالَ يُذَكِّرُهَا حَتَّى أَبْكَاهَا، فَقَالَ لَهَا: «إِنْ قُلْتُ لَكِ ذَاكَ إِنِّي وَاللَّهِ لَئِنِ اسْتَطَعْتُ لَأُشَارِكَنَّهُمَا بِمِثْلِ عَيْشِهِمَا الشَّدِيدِ لِعَلِّي أُدْرِكُ مَعَهُمَا عَيْشَهُمَا الرَّخَيَّ»
