Al-ZuhdAhmad Ibn Hanbal
  1. ʿAbdullāh narrated to us; my father related to me; Yazīd narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from al-Jurayrī, from Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī:

ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) once saw ʿUtbah ibn Farqad wearing a shirt whose sleeves reached past his fingertips. He called for a blade so that he might cut the excess from their ends. ʿUtbah implored, “O Commander of the Believers, I am embarrassed for it to be cut; let me shorten it myself.” So ʿUmar left the matter to him.
