653. ʿAbd Allah narrated—from his father, from Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth—who said: I heard al-Aʿmash, from one of his companions, relate that

Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allah once passed by ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb while a piece of meat was hanging from his hand. ʿUmar asked, “What is this, Jābir?” He replied, “It is meat I bought because I felt a craving for it.” ʿUmar said, “So whenever you crave something you just buy it? Do you not fear that you might be of those about whom Allah said, ‘You exhausted your share of good things during your worldly life’ (al-Aḥqāf 46:20)?”
