- ʿAbd Allah reported to us; my father reported to me; ʿAbd Allah ibn Yazid reported to us; Haywah reported to us; Hajjaj ibn Shaddad informed me that Abu Salih al-Ghifari informed him that a man came to ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab—may Allah have mercy on him—and said, “My people put me forward, so I led them in prayer, and then they asked me to tell them stories, so I complied.” ʿUmar—may Allah have mercy on him—said to him, “Lead them in prayer but do not tell them stories.” The man returned to ʿUmar three or four times, and ʿUmar said to him, “Do not tell stories; I fear that you might elevate yourself, and then Allah would seize you and bring you low in a single grasp.”
٦٤٥ - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي أبِي، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ، حَدَّثَنَا حَيْوَةُ، أَخْبَرَنِي حَجَّاجُ بْنُ شَدَّادٍ، أَنَّ أَبَا صَالِحٍ الْغِفَارِيَّ أَخْبَرَهُ، أَنَّ رَجُلًا أَتَى عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ (رحمه الله) فَقَالَ: «إِنَّ قَوْمِي قَدَّمُونِي فَصَلَّيْتُ بِهِمْ ثُمَّ أَمَرُونِي أَنْ أَقُصَّ عَلَيْهِمْ، فَفَعَلْتُ» فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ (رحمه الله): «صَلِّ بِهِمْ وَلَا تَقُصَّ عَلَيْهِمْ» فَتَرَدَّدَ إِلَى عُمَرَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ أَوْ أَرْبَعًا فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ: " لَا تَقُصَّ؛ فَإِنِّي أَخَافُ عَلَيْكَ أَنْ تَرْفَعَ نَفْسَكَ فَيَضَعَكَ اللَّهُ قَبْضَةً
